From a historical and a politological perspective the Viennese scholars Barbara Liegl and Georg Spitaler worked on the career of professional and amateur players as well as coaches who immigrated to Austria between 1945 and 2005.
The three-years research project "Migration in Austrian football after 1945" was funded by the Austrian Science Fund (FWF).
A selection of the collected data is now available online. Additional information is published in the book "Legionäre am Ball" ("Legionaires on the ball").
The conference "Migration in European Football. Transnational networks - national identity politics" was held in April 2008. A report from Gerd Dembowski (in German) is available here.
The international conference was the final highlight of the research project "Migration in Austrian football after 1945". Some of the presentations are available as audiofiles (in English + German).
